What is Robitussin Honey Cough (dextromethorphan)?

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.


Dextromethorphan is used to treat a cough.


Dextromethorphan will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.

Dextromethorphan may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.


What is the most important information I should know about Robitussin Honey Cough (dextromethorphan)?


Do not give this medication to a child younger than 4 years old. Always ask a doctor before giving a cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children. Do not use dextromethorphan if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take dextromethorphan before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body. Do not use any other over-the-counter cough, cold, or allergy medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of one or more types of medicine. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains dextromethorphan. Dextromethorphan will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Robitussin Honey Cough (dextromethorphan)?


Do not use dextromethorphan if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take dextromethorphan before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist about using this medicine if you have emphysema or chronic bronchitis.


This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. This medication may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Artificially-sweetened liquid forms of cough medicine may contain phenylalanine. This would be important to know if you have phenylketonuria (PKU). Check the ingredients and warnings on the medication label if you are concerned about phenylalanine.


How should I take Robitussin Honey Cough (dextromethorphan)?


Use this medication exactly as directed on the label, or as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended. Cough medicine is usually taken only for a short time until your symptoms clear up.


Do not give this medication to a child younger than 4 years old. Always ask a doctor before giving cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough or cold medicine in very young children.

Measure the liquid form of this medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.


Allow the dextromethorphan lozenge or disintegrating strip to dissolve in your mouth.


Drink extra fluids to help loosen the congestion and lubricate your throat while you are taking this medication. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, cough, or skin rash.

If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time if you have taken a cough medicine within the past few days.


Store dextromethorphan at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.

What happens if I miss a dose?


Since cough medicine is usually taken only as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.


What happens if I overdose?


Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Overdose symptoms may include feeling restless or nervous.


What should I avoid while taking Robitussin Honey Cough (dextromethorphan)?


Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of dextromethorphan. This medication can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Avoid taking diet pills, caffeine pills, or other stimulants (such as ADHD medications) without your doctor's advice. Taking a stimulant together with cough medicine can increase your risk of unpleasant side effects.


Do not use any other over-the-counter cough, cold, or allergy medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. Dextromethorphan is contained in many combination medicines available over the counter. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of this medicine. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains dextromethorphan.

Robitussin Honey Cough (dextromethorphan) side effects


Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using dextromethorphan and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • severe dizziness, anxiety, restless feeling, or nervousness;




  • confusion, hallucinations; or




  • slow, shallow breathing.



Less serious side effects are more likely, such as stomach upset.

  • imatinib (Gleevec);




  • quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex);




  • ranolazine (Ranexa)




  • ritonavir (Norvir);




  • sibutramine (Meridia);




  • terbinafine (Lamisil);




  • medicines to treat high blood pressure; or




  • antidepressant medications such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Etrafon), bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), imipramine (Janimine, Tofranil), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), and others.

What is Ru-Tuss Jr. (guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine)?

Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It helps loosen congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth.


Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).


The combination of guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine is used to treat stuffy nose, sinus congestion, and cough caused by allergies or the common cold.


Guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.


What is the most important information I should know about Ru-Tuss Jr. (guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine)?

Robinul Forte


Generic Name: glycopyrrolate (glye koe PIE roe late)

Brand Names: Cuvposa, Robinul, Robinul Forte


What is Robinul Forte (glycopyrrolate)?

Glycopyrrolate reduces the secretions of certain organs in the body.


Glycopyrrolate helps to control conditions such as peptic ulcers that involve excessive stomach acid production.


Glycopyrrolate is also used to reduce drooling in children ages 3 to 16 who have certain medical conditions, such as cerebral palsy.


Glycopyrrolate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.


What is the most important information I should know about Robinul Forte (glycopyrrolate)?


You should not use glycopyrrolate if you are allergic to it, or if you have bladder obstruction or other urination problems, a bowel obstruction called paralytic ileus, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, severe constipation, severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon, glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, or if you also take potassium chloride.

Before you take glycopyrrolate, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, heart disease, a heart rhythm disorder, a stomach disorder, a colostomy or ileostomy, a thyroid disorder, high blood pressure, vision problems, or numbness and tingling.


Take glycopyrrolate on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. This medication may cause blurred vision and may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of glycopyrrolate, such as dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Glycopyrrolate can decrease sweating and you may be more prone to heat stroke.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Robinul Forte (glycopyrrolate)?


You should not use glycopyrrolate if you are allergic to it, or if you have:

  • bladder obstruction or other urination problems;




  • a bowel obstruction called paralytic ileus;




  • a blockage in your digestive tract (stomach or intestines), severe constipation;




  • severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon;




  • glaucoma;




  • myasthenia gravis; or




  • if you are also taking potassium chloride (Epiklor, K-Lor, K-Tab, Klor-Con, Micro-K, Rum-K, and others).



To make sure you can safely take glycopyrrolate, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:



  • kidney disease;




  • heart disease or a heart rhythm disorder;




  • a stomach disorder such as hiatal hernia, reflux disease, or slow digestion;




  • a colostomy or ileostomy;




  • a thyroid disorder;




  • high blood pressure;




  • vision problems; or




  • a nerve disorder that causes numbness or tingling.




FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether glycopyrrolate will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is not known whether glycopyrrolate passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Glycopyrrolate should not be given to a child younger than 3 years old.

How should I take Robinul Forte (glycopyrrolate)?


Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.


Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results.


Take glycopyrrolate on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Uses For Robitussin Extra Strength


Guaifenesin is used to help clear mucus or phlegm (pronounced flem) from the chest when you have congestion from a cold or flu. It works by thinning the mucus or phlegm in the lungs.


This medicine is available both over-the-counter (OTC) and with your doctor's prescription.


Do not give any over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicine to a baby or child under 4 years of age. Using these medicines in very young children might cause serious or possibly life-threatening side effects .


Before Using Robitussin Extra Strength


In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medicine, the following should be considered:


Allergies


Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.


Pediatric


Although there is no specific information comparing use of guaifenesin in children with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different side effects or problems in children than it does in adults. However, check with your doctor before using this medicine in children who have a chronic cough, such as occurs with asthma, or who have an unusually large amount of mucus or phlegm with the cough. Children with these conditions may need a different kind of medicine. Also, guaifenesin should not be given to children and infants younger than 2 years of age unless you are directed to do so by your doctor.


Do not give any over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicine to a baby or child under 4 years of age. Using these medicines in very young children might cause serious or possibly life-threatening side effects .


Geriatric


Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way they do in younger adults. Although there is no specific information comparing use of guaifenesin in the elderly with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different side effects or problems in older people than it does in younger adults.

Breast Feeding


There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.


Interactions with Medicines


Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.


Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol


Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.


Proper Use of guaifenesin

This section provides information on the proper use of a number of products that contain guaifenesin. It may not be specific to Robitussin Extra Strength. Please read with care.


Drinking plenty of water while taking guaifenesin may help loosen mucus or phlegm in the lungs.


For patients taking the extended-release capsule form of this medicine:


  • Swallow the capsule whole, or open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on soft food such as applesauce, jelly, or pudding and swallow without crushing or chewing.

For patients taking the extended-release tablet form of this medicine:


  • If the tablet has a groove in it, you may carefully break it into two pieces along the groove. Then swallow the pieces whole, without crushing or chewing them.

  • If the tablet does not have a groove, it must be swallowed whole. Do not break, crush, or chew it before swallowing.

Dosing


The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.


The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.


  • For regular (short-acting) oral dosage forms (capsules, oral solution, syrup, or tablets):
    • For cough:
      • Adults—200 to 400 milligrams (mg) every four hours.

      • Children 6 to 12 years of age—100 to 200 mg every four hours.

      • Children 4 to 6 years of age—50 to 100 mg every four hours.

      • Children and infants up to 4 years of age—Use is not recommended .



  • For long-acting oral dosage forms (extended-release capsules or tablets):
    • For cough:
      • Adults—600 to 1200 mg every twelve hours.

      • Children 6 to 12 years of age—600 mg every twelve hours.

      • Children 4 to 6 years of age—300 mg every twelve hours.

      • Children and infants up to 4 years of age—Use is not recommended .



Missed Dose


If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.


Storage


Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.


Keep out of the reach of children.


Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.


Precautions While Using Robitussin Extra Strength


If your cough has not improved after 7 days or if you have a fever, skin rash, continuing headache, or sore throat with the cough, check with your doctor. These signs may mean that you have other medical problems.


Robitussin Extra Strength Side Effects


Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.


Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:


Less common or rare
  • Diarrhea

  • dizziness

  • headache

  • hives

  • nausea or vomiting

  • skin rash

  • stomach pain

Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.

Peptic Ulcer Disease


Has been used as an adjunct in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease;a b however, no conclusive data that it aids in the healing, decreases the rate of recurrence, or prevents complications of peptic ulcers.c d


With the advent of more effective therapies for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease, antimuscarinics have only limited usefulness in this condition.c d


Surgery


To inhibit salivation and excessive secretions of the respiratory tract (antisialogue).b c d However, current surgical practice (e.g., using general anesthetics that do not stimulate salivary and tracheobronchial secretions) has reduced the need to control excessive respiratory secretions during surgery.c d


To prevent other cholinergic effects during surgery (e.g., cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension, bradycardia) secondary to visceral traction (resultant vagal stimulation), carotid sinus stimulation, or concomitant drugs (e.g., succinylcholine).b c d

Initially, 1 mg 3 times daily (morning, early afternoon, and bedtime); may increase bedtime dose to 2 mg if needed to control overnight symptoms.a c

Maintenance dosage of 1 mg twice daily is adequate in most adults.a c

Generic Name: rivaroxaban (RIV a ROX a ban)

What is rivaroxaban?

Rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots.


Rivaroxaban is used to prevent a type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). A DVT can occur after certain types of surgery.


Rivaroxaban may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.


What is the most important information I should know about rivaroxaban?


Rivaroxaban can cause a very serious blood clot around your brain or spinal cord if you undergo a spinal tap or receive spinal anesthesia (epidural), especially if you have a genetic spinal defect, a history of spinal surgery or repeated spinal taps, or if you are using other medications to treat or prevent blood clots. Symptoms of this type of blood clot include numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or loss of movement. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using rivaroxaban. Many other drugs (including some over-the-counter medicines) can increase your risk of bleeding or life-threatening blood clots, and it is very important to tell your doctor about all medicines you have recently used.

Blood clots around the brain or spinal cord may occur if you use rivaroxaban with other drugs that can affect blood clotting, including aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Advil or Motrin, and any other medications to treat or prevent blood clots.


Tell your caregivers at once if you have signs of bleeding such as black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, confusion, feeling like you might pass out, or any bleeding that will not stop.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking rivaroxaban?


You should not use this medication if you are allergic to rivaroxaban, or if you have active or uncontrolled bleeding. Rivaroxaban can cause a very serious blood clot around your brain or spinal cord if you undergo a spinal tap or receive spinal anesthesia (epidural). This type of blood clot could cause long-term paralysis, and may be more likely to occur if you have:

  • a genetic spinal defect;




  • a history of spinal surgery or repeated spinal taps; or




  • if you are using other medications to treat or prevent blood clots.



Rivaroxaban may cause you to bleed more easily, especially if you have:



  • a bleeding disorder that is inherited or caused by disease;




  • hemorrhagic stroke;




  • uncontrolled high blood pressure; or




  • stomach or intestinal bleeding or ulcer.



To make sure you can safely take rivaroxaban, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease.


FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether rivaroxaban will harm an unborn baby. However, this medicine could cause bleeding complications during childbirth. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is not known whether rivaroxaban passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using rivaroxaban.

How should I take rivaroxaban?


Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.


You may take rivaroxaban with or without food. The 20-milligram dose should be taken with food.


Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using rivaroxaban. If you need surgery or dental work, tell the surgeon or dentist ahead of time that you are using this medication. If you need anesthesia for a medical procedure or surgery, you may need to stop using rivaroxaban for a short time. Do not stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?


Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Take your next dose the following day and stay on your once-daily schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.


What happens if I overdose?


Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Overdose may cause excessive bleeding.


What should I avoid while taking rivaroxaban?


Avoid activities that may increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Use extra care to prevent bleeding while shaving or brushing your teeth.

Rivaroxaban side effects


Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using rivaroxaban and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), bleeding from wounds or needle injections, any bleeding that will not stop;




  • feeling like you might pass out;




  • black or bloody stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;




  • numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness (especially in your legs and feet); or




  • loss of movement in any part of your body.



Less serious side effects may include:



  • muscle pain;




  • itching; or




  • pain in your arms or legs.

Rivaroxaban Dosing Information


Usual Adult Dose for Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis after Hip Replacement Surgery:

Prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery:
10 mg orally once a day starting 6 to 10 hours after surgery.

Duration of therapy is 35 days for hip replacement surgery and 12 days for knee replacement surgery.

Usual Adult Dose for Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis after Knee Replacement Surgery:

Prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery:
10 mg orally once a day starting 6 to 10 hours after surgery.

Duration of therapy is 35 days for hip replacement surgery and 12 days for knee replacement surgery.

Usual Adult Dose for Atrial Fibrillation:

Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation:
20 mg orally, once daily with the evening meal.


What other drugs will affect rivaroxaban?


Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially:



  • bosentan (Tracleer);




  • conivaptan (Vaprisol);




  • dexamethasone (Cortastat, Dexasone, Solurex, DexPak);




  • rifabutin (Mycobutin), rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate), or rifapentine (Priftin);




  • St. John's wort;




  • quinidine (Quin-G);




  • verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan);




  • an antibiotic such as azithromycin (Zithromax), clarithromycin (Biaxin) or erythromycin (E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, Pediazole);




  • antifungal medication such as itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral);




  • a barbiturate such as butabarbital (Butisol), secobarbital (Seconal), pentobarbital (Nembutal), or phenobarbital (Solfoton);




  • heart or blood pressure medication such as reserpine, amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), diltiazem (Cartia, Cardizem), dronedarone (Multaq), felodipine (Plendil), quinidine (Quin-G), or verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan);




  • HIV medication such as efavirenz (Sustiva, Atripla), etravirine (Intelence), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), nevirapine (Viramune), ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra), or saquinavir (Invirase);




  • medicines to treat narcolepsy, such as armodafinil (Nuvigil) or modafinil (Progivil);




  • medicines used to prevent organ transplant rejection, such as cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune) or tacrolimus (Prograf); or




  • seizure medication such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol), felbamate (Felbatol), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), phenytoin (Dilantin), or primidone (Mysoline).




Many other drugs (including some over-the-counter medicines) can increase your risk of bleeding, and it is very important to tell your doctor about all medicines you have recently used. Bleeding or blood clots around the brain or spinal cord may occur if you use rivaroxaban with other drugs that can affect blood clotting, such as:

  • abciximab (ReoPro), eptifibatide (Integrelin), tirofiban (Aggrastat);




  • cilostazol (Pletal), clopidogrel (Plavix), dipyridamole (Persantine, Aggrenox), prasugrel (Effient), ticlopidine (Ticlid);




  • dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), fondaparinux (Arixtra), heparin, tinzaparin (Innohep)warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven);




  • argatroban (Acova), bivalirudin (Angiomax), lepirudin (Refludan);




  • alteplase (Activase), tenecteplase (TNKase), urokinase (Abbokinase);




  • an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Naprelan, Treximet), celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Arthrotec, Cambia, Cataflam, Voltaren, Flector Patch, Pennsaid, Solareze), indomethacin (Indocin), meloxicam (Mobic), and others;




  • salicylates such as Backache Relief Extra Strength, Novasal, Nuprin Backache Caplet, Doan's Pills Extra Strength, Pepto-Bismol, Tricosal, and others.
